Visitor Safety Tips website & QR code
DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT, TOURISM, SCIENCE AND INNOVATION

The challenge
Visitors to Queensland are highly vulnerable when disasters strike as they often don’t know where to go for more information, what to do in a disaster or even where to evacuate to. To help keep visitors safe during a natural disaster, the Department of Tourism and Sport engaged Articulous to develop a Visitor Safety Tips website and campaign materials to help keep Queensland tourists safe during a natural disaster.
Our action
Articulous engaged Regional Tourism Organisations, Air BnB, Queensland Hotels Association, Caravanning Queensland, visitor information centres, local councils and emergency services agencies to develop the site. We then partnered with Queensland Reconstruction Authority’s Get Ready team to create the Visitor Safety Tips web pages on their Get Ready website.
The new web pages include safety tips for tourists to prepare when natural disasters strike during their holiday as well as advice for visitors on how to stay safe at the beach, around wildlife and where to go for medical help. It also provides information to help visitors on the steps to take after a disaster has struck.
Articulous developed a series of materials to promote the site and a campaign for the Queensland Government to implement to encourage tourism operators and organisations to share the QR code and materials with tourists and visitors when a disaster strikes.
The outcome
Resources included a Visitor Safety Tips fact sheet and posters for tourism operators to share with visitors as well as social media posts, website thumbnail, draft emails and newsletter content. The fact sheet will be translated into several languages to ensure non-English speaking tourists can also access information.
Funding for the project was provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
